Coaches, please let me know how this schedule works out for you. I’d like to keep it this way through April.
The blue mesh jerseys that were handed out last week are practice jerseys. Please wear them to every practice. If you did not receive one, we should be getting more in toward the end of next week. Game uniforms will (should) be in before the next tournament (Apr 4-6).
We’re starting our workshop programs next week. These workshops are individual skill sessions where we’ll concentrate on a specific set of skills for 90 minutes. The 3 basic workshops are Shooting, Big Man and Perimeter Player. I’ll run these programs but if any coaches/parents want to help out, feel free to do so.
During the shooting workshop we’ll discuss the mechanics, basics and fundamentals of shooting in more detail than we do in the 10 minutes of practice devoted to form shooting. Some of the things we’ll cover include reading the defender, shooting off the pass, shooting off the dribble, the 1-2 vs the hop, cross over step vs open step, head fakes, jab steps, step backs and quick releases. In general players can expect to take 250-500 shots during this workshop.
The Big Man Workshop is devoted to moves for centers and power forwards. We’ll cover getting open (swimming, ducking, spinning), posting up, drop steps, dribble drop steps, Shaq spins, up and unders, spins, hook shots, step-pound-hops, etc.
The Perimeter Player Workshops are for guards and small forwards and focus on more ball handling and getting open off the dribble. We’ll also cover reading the defender, coming off screens, crossovers, double crosses, step backs, sweeps, spins, pro hops, shake and bakes, hesitations, etc.
Any player can attend any workshop regardless of position, i.e. a point guard can attend the Big Man Workshop. Even if you think you know all these moves, its great practice. I personally think the workshop series is one of the best aspects of our AAU program and I encourage everyone to attend all the workshops. If you’d like to attend any of the workshops, please rsvp via email with the specific workshops you want to attend so I can get an idea of how many kids to expect. If we get too many kids and I can’t fit everyone on the courts reserved, I’ll add sessions to accommodate everyone, but please rsvp. Workshops are free to our AAU players. If space permits, we will open up the sessions to other kids starting 3 days prior at $35/session. Mar-April sessions are:
